High salinity and extreme environments: How to select the most suitable large flow filter element for seawater desalination and mineral extraction systems?

Seawater desalination, mineral extraction and high-salt wastewater treatment fall under the extremely demanding conditions of the industrial filtration field. Such water bodies typically possess characteristics such as high salt content, high chloride ion content, strong chemical corrosiveness, and complex impurity components, along with frequent pressure fluctuations during equipment operation. Conventional filter elements are prone to suffer from problems such as salt crystal blockage in filter pores, material corrosion and aging, and cracking and leakage of the bonding layer under these conditions. This directly leads to severe fouling of the subsequent RO membranes and frequent equipment shutdowns, significantly increasing the operational and production costs of the equipment. Therefore, adaptability to the working conditions, corrosion resistance stability and operational economy have become the three core criteria for the selection of large flow filter cartridge, and are also the key considerations for replacing imported high-end filter elements.
The core pain points of high-salinity extreme conditions mainly lie in the insufficient material compatibility and poor flux stability. The original water of seawater desalination can have a TDS of up to 35,000 ppm, rich in chloride ions and colloidal impurities, and long-term operation will continuously erode ordinary filter materials and sealing structures; in mineral extraction scenarios, there are also acid-base mother liquids, organic solvents, and high-concentration metal salts, which require extremely high chemical corrosion resistance and anti-aging performance for the high flow pleated filter element. Most common filter elements on the market have limited material compatibility and are prone to problems such as filtering short circuits, pressure drop surges, and a sudden reduction in service life over time, making them unable to meet the continuous industrial production requirements.

The products are equipped with multiple types of specialized filter materials, allowing for flexible selection as needed: PP material is suitable for regular seawater pretreatment and high-salinity wastewater filtration, with broad acid-base resistance and outstanding cost-effectiveness; PES material is resistant to high temperatures and oxidation, suitable for high-temperature seawater desalination conditions; PTFE material has extremely strong corrosion resistance and can handle high corrosive media such as strong acids and bases in mineral extraction; glass fiber material has a large filtration capacity and is suitable for high-suspended matter mineral solutions filtration, covering the pH range of 1–14 and the temperature range of -20°C to 120°C, completely solving the problems of high-salinity medium corrosion and salt crystal blockage.
In terms of structure and operational performance, the products adopt an integrated hot-melt and ultrasonic seamless welding process, without the risk of adhesive detachment, eliminating the problems of secondary pollution by high-salinity media and filtering short circuits. An internal reinforced support frame is provided, with a pressure difference resistance of up to 0.6 MPa or more, capable of stably withstanding the high pressure impact and flow fluctuations of seawater desalination and mineral extraction systems. The 6-inch large-diameter high-flow design allows a single 60-inch large flux filter element to have a maximum flow capacity of 113 m³/h, with extremely low pressure loss. Compared to ordinary filter elements, it significantly reduces the number of filter elements used, simplifies equipment, and effectively improves the operational efficiency of the entire filtration system.
